Donegal Road Safety Conference puts focus on Community Action
Following a local initiative a Road Safety Conference was organised in Donegal to be held in the Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny on the 1st and 2nd of May 2008.
Often people feel helpless at a time of loss and many people feel somebody should be doing something about the carnage on our roads. The conference was addressed by prominent speakers from the many agencies with a specific remit in relation to road safety but the focus of the conference was on initiatives by individuals to make travel safer on our roads.
Some of the speakers have taken personal tragedies and turned them into positive action. The conference was open to everybody but it was not as well attended as was hoped. However, Donegal County Council arranged to webcast the conference so all the presentations are available on the Internet at www.donegalcoco.public-i.tv . The effort involved by all the participants is well appreciated by the organisers and we are grateful to the Council for ensuring that these presentations are now available to a much bigger audiance than we could ever have hoped to reach.

Various reports have highlighted the increased risk and incidence of crashes in the border areas in Ireland, north and south. Consequently, this conference will hear from speakers from both sides of the border who have made their own personal and specific contributions to road safety.
In conjunction with the conference a schools' essay competition was organized. The competition was open to all students in the Donegal aged 16 or over. The winners all came from The Royal and Prior Comprehensive in Raphoe.
Also, Applied Leaving Certificate students from Finn Valley College made their own DVD which was viewed at the conference.
